Location: Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials 2008 : Waxing Up
Taken with: Canon Digital IXUS 70
Resizing: Adobe Photoshop CS2
Taken yesterday [Saturday 3rd May] at Badminton Horse Trials. I'm aware that the photographs are not great; my digital IXUS isn't that great I'm saving for a new one.
A rider's mount being waxed up before going into the start box in the arena. This little bugger woudn't allow the bloke to put the wax on his legs and kept attemping to kick him, so they had to hold his foreleg up!! Then he really did look peeved!! ^^

Maybe I'm just not very smart... But why do they put wax on their legs? And I saw bits of tape or something on their muzzles. Why was that there? o.o

Sorry if that sounds silly. I don't know much about this stuff ^^;

I'm not very familiar with the going-ons of prepping the horses for this kind of thing. Does the wax create a protective coat on their legs? Beautiful horse.

no sorry, it helps the horse to slide easily over the jumps if they touch it with their legs. :)

They wax up to help the horse to slide easily over the jumps if their legs make contact; and the tape or guard on their noses is to protect the soft tissue of the nose if they fall and land on their faces. Also its to help ease the pressure of the leather of the flash noseband, which in turn is used to gain more control over the horse. :)

Oh geez. I have watched jumping for years, and never realized this. I just thought the horse was sweating. :lol:
